Connecting with God (Barbara Miles and Sharon Carter)

Our relationship with God is the wellspring from which everything else in life flows. We are meant to know Him, to continually discover more about the wonder of who He is, to develop an “easy intimacy” with the Lord.

Connecting with one another (Debra Cooper and Jessica Escobales)

Being a part of the Body of Christ is so much more than attending meetings together. God gives us the opportunity to grow together, sharing and developing our individual gifts, leaning on one another, covenanting together to see God’s purpose come to pass.

God has graced us to grow in beauty, both inwardly and outwardly, to reflect with purity and passion the image of the One who has made us who we are.

As women two of our most challenging and fulfilling roles are wife and mother. Learning to bless our husbands and children is central in becoming who God intends for us to be.

Serving in our assigned place can be amazing and amazingly difficult and draining. We need God’s grace to overcome with joy and patience the pressure of every day service.

The Scripture strongly encourages us to show hospitality to one another and even to people we don’t know. This gracious skill can be developed and shared with confidence when our hearts are to bless one another.

Sharing the good news of God’s love and grace with others can be a natural outflow of our living relationship with the Lord as we engage our world day to day.

The wonder of God’s grace is that our deepest pain can be our most effective avenue of ministry. We are called to break the chains of the bound and bind up the wounds of the broken.

Finally, some updates from South Africa!  I’ve been here 5 months and it has been a very busy time for me.   I am settled in and all is well.

This is a picture taken during my trip in mid-August to the church branch in Steelpoort (about two hours away) and my trip to Polokwane.  Click on it for a newsletter with more pictures and details.






This is a picture of Pastor Sanford, myself, Pastor Stella, and Pastor Eddie from my installation service in August.  Click on the picture for more details about this service.  I have a video of the installation service, but it’s much too big right now.  I’ll need to work on editing it so that a portion of it can be posted here.

In September, I took a week-long mission trip to Zimbabwe with some Gateway Church International (GWCI) members.  I’m still working on that newsletter.  Look back here soon to see details about this trip.
For Christmas, the church office is closed for two weeks.  I’ll be going with the Phetlas to the Indian Ocean (near Durban) for a few days to have a time of refreshing.

The Five C’s of Covenant Community Life
COMMITTED
Having discussed Called and Connected, the next word in our discussion of the 5 C’s of Covenant Community Life is Committed.
Commitment is a covenant word.  It is a word of agreement.  It is an action word.  It defines the irreducible minimum upon which relationships and churches can be built.  In covenant commitment is swearing to one’s own hurt.   In agreement it is recognition of a common purpose and faith.
Commitment holds us steady for change.  We have discovered that people only change when they feel secure in their relationships.  Finally commitment is the bridge over which we transport truth.  People seldom speak the truth in love, in the absence of commitment.
Psalms 37:5 – 6 NASB (updated)
Commit your way to the Lord, trust also in Him, and He will do it.  He will bring forth your righteousness as the light and your judgment as the noonday.

Susan Schmid has embarked on an exciting new adventure.  She traveled to South Africa on August 2nd, 2009 and began a two year missionary stint at Gateway Church International in Witbank.  She will be serving Pastors Eddie and Stella Phetla in an administrative role while she is there.  This is Susan’s third long-term missionary trip since she has been a part of Gateway Church.  She was involved in a team that planted a church in Dagestan, Russia, and later spent a season ministering in London, England.  Susan will be keep us up-to-date with all God is doing through newsletters and posts on this website.  If you would like to contribute to Susan while she is ministering in South Africa, please contact the church office.

Cuba Connection

Since 2000, Gateway Church has been connected to the church in Cuba through Bishop Samuel Ramos and his network of churches throughout the island.  God has blessed our relationship with Bishop Ramos and the churches in Cuba.  Through the years Pastor Cooper and several other men from our church have taken short term mission trips to encourage the church that is growing in the midst of persecution.  One of the greatest areas that God has challenged Gateway Church to make an impact in Cuba is by ministering to and encouraging the pastors that labor so faithfully there.  In 2000, God challenged our body to build a house for one of the pastors in Cuba.  Since then we have committed to financially support several pastors.  We can support a pastor for only $30 a month.  This gift enables the continuing revival to have faithful laborers in the harvest.  We ask that you consider committing to all or even part of the monthly support for a pastor.  If you can’t provide monthly support, perhaps you could provide a one-time offering that is designated for the church in Cuba.  You can either place your financial gift in the offering on any Sunday morning, or you can bring or mail it to the church office at 502 S. Jackson St. Morristown, TN 37814.  All offerings intended to support the pastors in Cuba should be clearly marked as such.

Nuestra iglesia ha comenzado un segundo Servicio de Adoración y Alabanza los Domingos a las 6:30 PM. Nuestro propósito y llamado es alcanzar a la comunidad hispana de Morristown, Tennessee  y sus alrededores con el mensaje de salvación y libertad que hay en Jesucristo.  La iglesia Gateway es una comunidad de pacto que cree que un mundo separado y segregado como el de hoy, solo la iglesia puede modelar la verdadera reconciliación.

The Five C’s of Covenant Community Life
CONNECTED
Here at Gateway Church we are seeking to process our faith in ways that facilitate our obedience to the Great Commission given by Jesus in Matthew 28:16-20:
“But the eleven disciples proceeded to Galilee, to the mountain, which Jesus had designated. When they saw Him, they worshiped Him; but some were doubtful. And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.  Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”
To aid us in the process we use the Five C’s of Covenant Community Life.  They are CALLED, CONNECTED, COMMITTED, COVERED, and COMISSIONED.
I previously shared some of my thoughts on the power of being CALLED. Now I would like to talk with you about the opportunity of being CONNECTED.
Paul tells us in Ephesians 4:11-16 that properly joined believers enjoy the opportunity to grow up.  What a novel idea that in communities of faith, people would actually mature and attain the unity of the faith — that we could measure up to the implications of our relationship to Jesus as Lord of our lives.
Scripture informs us that the whole Body (the Church) is fitted and held together by what every joint supplies.  This truth teaches me at least two things:
1)  I have needs that God intends to supply by my being properly related to other members of His Body, the Church,
2)  I have the opportunity and the capacity to supply what others who are connected to me need.
The balance between receiving and supplying is the path to maturity.  Maturity is when you produce more than you consume.  It isn’t that we do not or should not consume resources, we have legitimate needs and lacks; but, if we only consume, we become parasites.  Conversely, we cannot sustain a relationship in which we only give and never receive.  Those kinds of relationships cause burn-out.  It is the balance between receiving and supplying that produces a maturing Body that grows in true love.
For this reason, Gateway Church values and nurtures good connections.  Let me ask you, Are you properly connected to Jesus as your Lord and His Church as your spiritual Body?  If you are not properly connected, perhaps you would allow the family called Gateway Church to help you find a good connection.
